Since 1938, Superman has delighted large and young audiences with his numerous comics, films, cinema films, video games, and other media.

Learning to draw Superman can be a great way to celebrate this iconic hero!

How to Draw Superman

Step 1

In this first step of our guide on how to draw Superman, we’ll start with his head and face. Many superheroes wear elaborate masks, but Superman doesn’t wear any at all.

That might make his head easier to draw than many masked heroes!

You could start by drawing an oval in pencil, as this will help keep the proportions of the head while drawing the final details.

In this picture, he has quite an intense expression, and you can draw his facial features with pretty simple lines.

Then you can outline his face around his facial details, including his ears and square jaw. We then style his signature hairdo, including the classic “Superman Curl!”

Finally, we can draw the beginning of her dress around her neck, and then you have completed step 1!

Step 2

One of the most iconic aspects of Superman’s attire is his flowing red cape that floats behind him, and that’s exactly what we’re going to draw in this second part.

We draw curved, rounded lines that start from the collar of his suit and flow behind him.

As you work on this part, you should do your best to reproduce all lines as they appear in the reference image. We’ll be adding more to the cape later, so keep going!

Step 3

In this step of our Superman drawing guide, we will draw his arms and a little more of his cape.

He extends his fist before him in his flying pose as he soars through the air. This is the pose he will strike for this picture.

First, draw the fist to the left, then use curved, rounded lines for the arm behind it.

This is another step where you should replicate the reference image as closely as possible to achieve the correct proportions.

The right arm sticks out to the side, so you can also start drawing his chest. Finally, draw more of his cape flowing to the right to complete this step.

Step 4

Another truly iconic and recognizable aspect of Superman’s design is the S logo he sports on his chest.

Drawing this symbol can be more difficult than you think. So start by drawing the triangular outline of the icon, using the reference image as a guide.

Then we draw the S in the outline, which can get tricky! Again, please do your best to draw the S exactly as it appears inside the outline in the reference image.

Once you’ve drawn it, you can add smaller curved lines for the chest and waist muscles.

You can finish with the belt and the beginning of his legs, and then you’re ready for the final details in the next step of your Superman drawing.

Step 5

In this fifth phase of our guide on drawing Superman, we will finish the final details and elements. The main thing to add is his left leg.

You can draw it with curved lines to show that it’s curved inward while floating in the air.

Then all that remains is to add some shading detail on his chest, and then you can move on to the final step!

This is your drawing, so feel free to add some details before proceeding to the last step.

Maybe you could draw his Metropolis house in the background or more of his other superhero allies flying alongside him.

Step 6

You have come to the end of your Superman drawing, and in this drawing, you can end up with some awesome colors!

Superman has undergone a few variations over the years but is most commonly shown in his signature red and blue color scheme.

This is the color combination we chose in our reference image, so you can use it as an example if you want to create a classic look for him.

You could use lighter media like colored pencils and markers to give the image a cartoon style, but whatever colors and media you use will look great!
